What Can be Done About Deadly Stretch of I-10?

Ten people have died in eight crashes along a deadly stretch of I-10 in the Riverside County desert this year. Last year, 12 people were killed in crashes along the same stretch. The accidents have all occurred on I-10 between Coachella and Highway 177. Just last week, a 10-year-old boy died after the minivan he was riding in rolled over.

Following a deadly 2016, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had a meeting and agreed to limit road construction to nighttime hours. They also decided to add signage to help warn drivers of construction. Despite these efforts, fatal crashes along this roadway continue.

What is Behind the Rise in Crashes?

However, the circumstances of the crashes do not show a clear connection. This makes it difficult for authorities to pinpoint the root of the problem.

Caltrans spokesperson Terri Kasinga says driver behavior is an obvious issue. She says that having more CHP officers along this deadly stretch of I-10 to look out for dangerous drivers could help.

“While road improvements and increasing police presence might offer some help, the most important thing is for drivers to focus on the road, drive at a safe speed, and remove distractions behind the wheel,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
