What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury that is usually caused by a forceful, rapid back and forth movement of the neck. It can occur in various sports scenarios, but it is most commonly seen in car accident victims. The force of this motion causes damage to the ligaments and muscles in the neck. This can cause neck pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, headaches and other symptoms. Usually these symptoms dissipate within a few weeks, but sometimes they can cause long-term problems.
Is it a “Real Injury?”
Whiplash is a true medical condition caused by soft tissue trauma. It might be diagnosed as a cervical strain, muscle strain, or just as a soft tissue injury. These injuries are not visible on an MRI or other scans, so a doctor will have to diagnose it by examining you. Your doctor will determine what treatment plan is the best option for your particular injury.
Can I Receive Compensation for this Injury?
You can certainly seek compensation for a whiplash injury sustained in an accident. First, you can file a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company. You should also consult with a personal injury attorney experienced with car accident cases. Be careful not to accept an offer of compensation from the insurance company before consulting with your attorney. Insurance companies are notorious for offering car accident victims far less than the compensation they need to cover their medical treatment and other damages. Instead, let your attorney communicate with the insurance company and work out a fair settlement for your damages.
