Sometimes it seems like wealthy corporate defendants skate liability. However, there have been some recent examples where—after many transgressions and serious consequences—some modicum of justice may surface, resulting in white collar defendants being held accountable.
Here are two recent examples
- A peanut executive got 28 years for the 2008 and 2009 salmonella poisonings, which took nine lives and sickened many. Tainted peanut butter was traced to a Georgia plant. The prosecution of Stewart Parnell was the first time a U.S. food producer faced trial for food poisoning. Why prison? It turns out that Executive Parnell had faked lab test results and knowingly shipped salmonella-contaminated peanut butter! He was convicted of 67 counts.
- Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship convicted of conspiracy: With a long history of ignoring mine safety relations and systematically blocking disclosure of violations, a mine explosion killed 29 people.Blankenship, one of the wealthiest and most influential men in West Virginia, was sentenced to only one year in custody, plus a $250,000 fine. Blankenship started his sentence in California on May 12, 2016.
