Daughter Files Bleeding Death Lawsuit Against Xarelto

A woman whose father died after taking Xarelto has filed a wrongful bleeding death lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company. The lawsuit joins a multidistrict litigation against the makers of Xarelto: Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.

Xarelto is an oral anticoagulant prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. The drug also treats deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Doctors also prescribe Xarelto to patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery to prevent blood clots.

Bleeding Death Lawsuit Claims Drug Makers were Negligent

According to the wrongful bleeding death lawsuit, the makers of Xarelto failed to warn patients and doctors about the drug’s risks. The suit also claims there were flaws with the drug’s clinical trials. Furthermore, it addresses the fact that there is no reversal agent to counter Xarelto’s bleeding side effects. Warfarin, an older anticoagulant and a Xarelto alternative, can also causing bleeding problems. However, plasma or intravenous vitamin K can be administered to reverse the bleeding. Xarelto has no such antidote.

The plaintiff’s father allegedly took Xarelto from October 2013 until he died in February 2015. He suffered a gastrointestinal bleed on February 5, 2015, and passed away less than a week later.

There are currently about 15,000 Xarelto lawsuits across the country. The first bellwether Xarelto case goes to trial this month.

“Xarelto has caused severe injuries and death for patients who were not warned of its risks and the lack of a reversal agent. It is time for the manufacturers to own up to their mistakes,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
