Defective Passenger Airbags Prompt Recall Expansion

Ford has issued a recall for more than 800,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to faulty Takata passenger airbags. This addition brings the total number of Takata-related recalls for Ford vehicles to about 3 million. Honda has recalled 51 million Takata airbags worldwide.

Ford has cited the same issue as the other Takata recalls: defective airbags can explode in a crash and shoot shrapnel at occupants. The faulty airbags are responsible for 11 deaths and 180 injuries in the U.S.

Ford will soon contact the owners of affected vehicles about having their passenger airbags replaced. If you want to see if your vehicle is part of the recall, you can look up your vehicle by VIN on the Ford website.

Takata Pleads Guilty to Criminal Charges

Takata pleaded guilty last month to criminal wrongdoing regarding the defective airbag inflators. The company will pay $1 billion to resolve the U.S. Justice Department’s investigation. The company struck the deal shortly after three Takata executives were charged with concealing the defect.

“If Takata executives knew their airbags were dangerous and continued to produce them, they should be held accountable for the fallout,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
