Documentary Examines Dangers of Medical Devices

A new documentary available on Netflix addresses the dangers of medical devices. Among the devices examined in the documentary “The Bleeding Edge” are Bayer AG’s permanent birth control device, Essure, and Johnson & Johnson’s hip and pelvic mesh implants. The documentary highlights the medical device industry’s tendency to put profits ahead of patient safety.

Several women in the documentary tell their stories of being injured by Essure, a small metal coil that is inserted into the fallopian tubes to permanently prevent pregnancy. There are currently more than 16,000 lawsuits against Bayer over the device, which plaintiffs claim caused excessive bleeding, abdominal pain and other ailments.

The women interviewed in the documentary said Bayer concealed information about the potential risks of the device. Last week, Bayer announced it would be phasing out Essure sales in the U.S. However, the company maintains that the device is safe.

“The Bleeding Edge” also examines Johnson & Johnson implant devices, which were cleared by the FDA through a process that allows certain devices to be approved without full clinical studies. The company’s marketing of a product it knew to be unsafe is also discussed in the documentary.

“Doctors and patients should always be accurately informed of the risks associated with medical devices. Purposely concealing that information is a violation of patients’ rights,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
