Driver in Wrong Lane Causes Fatal Head-on Coachella Collision

A driver was killed in a head-on crash in Coachella Sunday morning. Police have identified 54-year-old Francisco Hernandez Cruz as the victim of the fatal crash. Cruz was driving his Pontiac south on Harrison Street when a northbound vehicle drifted into his lane and crashed into him.

The crash happened around 5:45 a.m. a mile south of Airport Boulevard. Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a 21-year-old Thermal woman, was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital for major injuries.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is still investigating the head-on crash, but alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), wrong-way crashes account for only a small percentage of accidents, but they are much more likely to result in fatalities and serious injuries. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) determined the fatality rate for wrong-way crashes was 12 times greater than all other accidents.

“We’re so sorry to hear news of another fatal accident and hope that police will be able to determine the cause of the crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
