DuPont Settles C8 Contamination Lawsuits

DuPont settled the 3,550 personal injury lawsuits related to C8 contamination at its West Virginia plant. The company will pay out $670.7 million to settle the lawsuits. DuPont spin-off company Chemours will pay half the settlement cost.

The lawsuits were brought by plaintiffs who claim DuPont withheld information from residents about the risks of C8—formally known as perfluorooctanoic acid—for causing kidney and testicular cancers. In one case, a man claimed he developed testicular cancer from water contaminated by DuPont’s plant.

C8 Contamination Linked to Cancer

In 2012, a scientific panel confirmed a probable link between perfluorooctanoic acid and testicular and kidney cancers. Further, in 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered DuPont to pay a $16.5 million penalty for failing to disclose information about its use of C8 and its dangers for neighboring communities.

“Hopefully this settlement helps ease some of the suffering experienced by the victims of C8 contamination,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
