Do E-Cigarette Vapors Increase Risk of Pneumonia?

A new study published in the European Respiratory Journal found that the vapor from e-cigarettes can can increase a person’s risk for pneumonia. Past studies have shown a link between smoking traditional cigarettes and an increased risk of pneumonia infections. The new study examines whether e-cigarettes—marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes—are also linked to increased risk of infection.

According to the researchers, the results of the study show that vaping makes a person’s airways more vulnerable to bacteria sticking the the airway lining cells. If a person has been exposed to the pneumococcal bacterium—which can exist in the airways without causing an infection—vaping can increase the risk of infection.

This study is just the latest in the growing body of research on e-cigarette risks. Other studies have revealed dangers such as the risk of developing an oral disease from vapor particles. One study even found that e-cigarette vapor can contain formaldehyde at levels up to 15 times that of traditional cigarettes.

“There is still a lot we don’t know about the effects of e-cigarettes. Consumers should be wary of these products touted as ‘safe’ alternatives to smoking, when there has not been enough research to determine their safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
