Elderly Man Initiates Police Chase

An elderly man was arrested after initiating a police chase through Apple Valley in December. Apple Valley Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop the suspect near the intersection of Serrano Road and Rimrock Road around 8:45 p.m. The suspect took off at speeds over 60 mph down residential streets.

The suspect then drove into a dead-end street. Police performed a PIT maneuver near Carlisle Road and Atoka Road. Police took the elderly man into custody, then transported him to the hospital for unknown injuries. The incident is under investigation.

Elderly Drivers at Risk of Fatal Crashes

While there’s no evidence yet that age was a factor in the incident, the issue of elderly driving is an important one. According to AAA, drivers ages 65 and older are at an increased risk for being involved in an accident. Drivers ages 80 and older are more likely to die in a crash than any other age group besides teenage drivers.

On average, 586 older adults get injured each day in crashes. If you have an older loved one whose driving you are concerned about, here are 5 tips that can help them stay safe on the roads:

  1. Help them exercise regularly.
  2. Make sure they do not drive if they are taking any medications that cause drowsiness or other impairments.
  3. Make sure they are having annual checkups for their vision and hearing.
  4. Discourage them from driving during hazardous weather conditions.
  5. Offer to drive them whenever you can.

“No one wants to have their independence limited by losing the ability to drive, but there are some realities about aging that older drivers have to come to terms with,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
