Researchers say mixing energy drinks with alcohol leads to an increased risk of injury. Researchers at the University of Victoria in British Columbia analyzed 13 studies on the effects of energy drinks, such as Red Bull and Monster Energy, when combined with alcohol. Injury rates significantly increase when people drink a combination of alcohol and energy drinks, according to the research.
Emergency room visits related to energy drinks nearly doubled from 2007 to 2011. About 15% of those visits involved a combination of alcohol and energy drinks.
Why Does Energy Drink-Alcohol Combo Lead to Injuries?
The studies looked at injuries such as falls and car accidents. They also examined dangerous behaviors like violence and suicidal thoughts. The studies did not clearly outline the reasoning behind the increased risk of injury. Some suggest people who drink the combination drinks are more likely to take risks. Another theory is the caffeine stimulation can mask the sedative effects of the alcohol. This could lead the drinker to believe they are far less intoxicated than they really are.
While prepackaged alcoholic energy drinks have been mostly banned, people can still buy the ingredients and create the dangerous combination themselves. And if you go out to any given nightclub, there’s bound to be someone ordering Vodka Red Bulls all night long.
“Mixing energy drinks with alcohol is a recipe for disaster. Please be responsible and reduce your risk of injury by avoiding this combination,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
