The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to e-cigarette companies to confront what they call an “epidemic” of teen vaping. The agency says it will not tolerate “a whole generation of young people becoming addicted to nicotine.” E-cigarette companies have 60 days to to submit their plans for addressing the youth vaping crisis to the FDA, or the agency says it will take action, which could include increasing regulations or imposing fines. The major manufacturers who will need to submit their plans to limit youth access to their products are Juul, Vuse, Blu, MarkTen XL and Logic Labs.

Furthermore, the FDA sent more than 1,300 warning letters and fines to retailers who illegally sold e-cigarette products to minors. The FDA has listed the retailers who has sold their products to minors on their website.

Vaping, which was first marketed as an alternative to smoking for those looking to quit, has become a teen trend in recent years. According to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, e-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco products among middle and high school students. A 2018 survey of US high school students revealed that 37% of high school seniors have admitted to vaping within the last 12 months. Even more upsetting are the statistics which reveal that 10.9 percent of eighth graders have also admitted to vaping within the last year. Given the fact that over 66% of 10th graders have reported that vaping devices are “very easy” to obtain, it should come as no surprise that the vaping epidemic continues to rise.

“This sharp increase in e-cigarette use by minors is a significant cause for concern. Manufacturers and retailers must take responsibility for their role in creating the problem, and work toward solutions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
