The Fourth of July should be a fun-filled holiday celebrating our country’s independence. Unfortunately, the celebrations can often turn dangerous—so much so that the National Safety Council (NSC) has dubbed the Fourth of July as “the most dangerous holiday of the year.”
Why makes Independence Day a dangerous holiday? Take the combination of alcohol and driving that usually occurs over a big holiday, and add in fireworks, and you can see how the Fourth can end up being a dangerous day.
Firework Dangers
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 9,600 fireworks-related injuries occurred during the Fourth of July holiday in 2011. Sadly, children are often the victims of these accidents. According to the NSC, children ages 10-14 are three times more likely to be injured by fireworks than the general population. One-third of these injuries come from small firecrackers. Roughly 20% come from bottle rockets and another 20% are from sparklers.
Drunk Driving Dangers
Impaired driving is also a significant safety concern during the Fourth of July holiday. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that the Fourth of July is the worst day of the year for fatal car accidents. Drunk driving is responsible for a large portion of those fatal crashes. A shocking 40% of all highway deaths on the Fourth of July weekend between 2007 and 2011 were caused by drunk driving.
“We wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July. Please prioritize the safety of yourself and others during your celebrations,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
