Governors Highway Safety Administration Releases Autonomous Vehicle Report

The Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) recently released a report on autonomous vehicle safety issues. The study was funded by State Farm, and focuses on the fact that human drivers will need to share the responsibility of driving with autonomous vehicles (AVs) for the foreseeable future. During this time of shared responsibility, the GHSA emphasizes that there will continue to be accidents and fatalities on roadways.

The report emphasizes that states and localities must continue to educate on and enforce safe driving behavior, even as AVs begin making their way onto roads. The reality is that fully autonomous vehicles are still a ways off from being available to the public—and even then, there will continue to be vehicles driven by humans sharing roadways with AVs for quite some time.

According to survey data shared in the report, many consumers are still skeptical about AVs. However, researchers suggest that enthusiasm for self-driving cars will increase as people learn more about these vehicles, and are able to experience them firsthand.

How Soon Will AVs be Here?

According to the report, consumers can expect AVs to be on the road in many states by 2025. Some Level 4 and Level 5 (fully driverless) AVs will be on U.S. roadways within 3-5 years.

“Autonomous vehicles are very promising, but there are still many hurdles to get over before they become a normal part of life,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
