Hallmark Issues Baby Toy Recall for Potential Choking Hazard

Hallmark has issued a baby toy recall because parts may pose a choking hazard. The recall includes roughly 6,000 Itty Bittys baby plush stacking toys in the U.S. and Canada. The toys have fabric pieces that can detach and pose a choking hazard to young children.

The items included in the baby toy recall are Disney-licensed plush animal stacking toys. They toys feature Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck characters. They were sold at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores and on Hallmark.com and Amazon from June 2016 through July 2017.

The company says consumers should not allow children to use the toys. If you purchased one of these toys, contact Hallmark at 1-800-425-5627 or visit the Hallmark Product Recalls page. The company will provide customers with a prepaid shipping label to return the product, and a $40 Hallmark gift card.

Baby Safety Month: Check for Recalls

September is Baby Safety Month, making it a good time for parents to revisit recall protocol. It is not uncommon for baby products to be recalled for safety reasons. You can check CPSC.gov or Safekids.org for updates on baby product recalls. Recalls do not expire, so even if you are not the original owner of the product, or the recall happened a while ago and you have not acted yet, you can still take advantage of the recall.

Here are 5 things to remember about baby product recalls:

  1. Double check that the product you own is the exact model and manufacture date as the ones being recalled. If it isn’t, then you don’t have to worry. This is important especially for products that are constantly being changed and upgraded, like car seats.
  2. Check to see if the recall specifies that you should stop using the product immediately. This means there is an immediate risk to your child if you continue to use it.
  3. Pay attention to the specifics of the recall. If your car seat is recalled, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is unusable. The recall might say you need to wait to receive a repair part to begin using the car seat again, or it might to only use the seat in your vehicle and not as a carrier outside the car.
  4. Determine what you need to do with the product. If a product is not fixable, the company might tell consumers to throw it away and receive a refund. They might also ask customers to return the product to the store for a refund or replacement, or to order a free repair kit to fix the problem.
  5. If you are unsure about the recall, just ask. Your baby’s safety is the most important thing. Contact the product manufacturer for any questions you have about the product or the recall.
