Harley-Davidson Recall is a Reminder to Maintain Brakes

Harley-Davidson is recalling several motorcycle models equipped with antilock braking systems (ABS) over a potential problem with the brakes. The concern is that if owners of the bikes have not properly maintained the braking systems, ABS will not work properly when needed.

ABS prevents wheels from locking up when a rider hits the brakes and improves stopping distances for motorcycles.Motorcycles equipped with ABS are involved in 31% less fatal crashes than those without, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Unfortunately, if the systems are not maintained, they may fail. Owners of these motorcycles must flush the DOT 4 brake fluid every two years to prevent deposits from forming. Harley-Davidson is concerned some owners might not be performing this necessary maintenance. To help protect riders, the company has issued a recall for 2008-2011 model year Touring, CVO Touring and VSRC motorcycles with ABS. Dealers will flush the brake system and replace brake fluid for owners free of charge. Owners of the affected bikes will be notified by mail.

“This recall is a good reminder for motorcycle owners to properly maintain their braking systems,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
