Hikers’ Bodies Found Near Amboy Crater on 113 Degree Day

Two bodies were found near Amboy Crater in the Mojave Desert Saturday. Authorities have identified the deceased hikers as 60-year-old Gen Miake and 58-year-old Kathie Barber of Yorba Linda.

According to news reports, Barber called 911 saying she had become separated from Miake, her husband. She also told police she was out of water, and that her husband had a heart condition.

A helicopter search team was dispatched to search for the couple. They were spotted about 100 yards away from each other, a mile or two east of the trailhead. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Temperatures Reached 113 at Amboy Crater

Amboy Crater is an extinct cinder cone volcano. It is a popular spot for hikers, even though temperatures are sweltering in the summer. Officials say the temperature was around 113 degrees when the bodies were found.

Heat-Related Illness Common for Desert Hikers in the Summer

If you are considering hiking during the hot summer months, please read over our 8 rules for hiking in the heat. However, remember that local law enforcement advises against hiking in the extreme triple-digit heat. You should also consider the very real possibility of heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses if you go hiking in extreme heat. If you begin to experience signs of heat exhaustion, it’s time to seek medical attention.

“We understand the hiking trails are enticing, but it is just not wise to go hiking on these days when the temperatures are so unforgiving,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
