Kentucky Woman Sues Onglyza Manufacturers for Heart Failure

A Kentucky woman is suing Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca for injuries she suffered by taking Onglyza, a type-2 diabetes drug. The lawsuit was filed in New York, but it may soon join the other 85 Onglyza heart failure lawsuits, which have been consolidated in the Eastern District of Kentucky.

The plaintiff says she took the drug from April 2014 to August 2016. As a result of use, she suffered heart failure, congestive heart failure and cardiovascular injury. Because of her injuries, she was unable to work as she used to, resulting in lost wages and lost earning capacity.

According to the lawsuit, the drug manufacturer knew of the risk for adverse events, including heart failure, associated with Onglyza, and failed to adequately warn doctors and patients.

There are currently around 85 lawsuits related to heart failure from Onglyza that have been consolidated into Multi-District Litigation in Kentucky. These lawsuits name Bristol-Myers Squibb, AstraZeneca and McKesson as defendants. They blame the drug manufacturers for cardiovascular complications, including heart failure, caused by Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR (a similar type-2 diabetes drug).

“If the drug companies knew about the risks associated with these medications and chose not to warn doctors and patients, the victims should be compensated for their injuries,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
