Do Your Kids Know How to Cross the Street Safely?
Do Your Kids Know How to Cross the Street Safely?

An 8-year-old child was injured while attempting to cross the street Monday morning in Cathedral City. The child apparently darted into the street and was sideswiped by a car. The accident occurred outside Landau Elementary School at Landau Boulevard and 30th Avenue around 7:20 a.m. The victim suffered a leg injury and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Police are still investigating the pedestrian accident, but so far they do not appear to be faulting the driver. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. While the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, it appears that the child unsafely entered the roadway.

Teach your Children to Cross the Street Safely

It’s important to make sure your children practice safe pedestrian habits. Here are 5 safe walking behaviors to teach your children:

  1. Always use the crosswalk to cross the street. Never jaywalk.
  2. Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street.
  3. Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If there are no sidewalks, they should walk facing traffic, staying as far away from traffic as possible.
  4. Don’t walk distracted. Make sure they put their phones and other devices away when crossing the street.
  5. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.

In general, children under the age of 10 should not cross the street without the help of an adult or older child. Until age 10, most children are unable to judge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.

“Our prayers are with the young child who was hurt in this accident. Please teach your children know how to safely cross the street,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
