Summer is underway, and for many kids that means road trips, visits to the amusement park, the pool, camps and more. But while you tote your kids from their activities, make sure they are using the proper car restraints at all times.
This might seem obvious to most people, but the frenzy of summer activities can cause parents and caretakers to forget to check on their children’s restraints. This can be devastating, as research shows 43% of children killed in car accidents between 2010 and 2014 were not wearing proper car restraints in the vehicle.
Keep Children in the Back Seat in Proper Car Restraints
Another 15% of children killed in auto accidents were sitting in the front seat when they should not have been. Children should ride in the back seat until age 13. According to research, children’s skeletons are not developed enough to handle impact like an adult until they are at least 12-13 years old. Even then, they are still at greater risk of injury when riding in the front seat. Restrained in the back seat is always the safest place for children to ride.
And don’t think that a quick trip down a rural road is no big deal. Sixty-seven percent of child car accident deaths occur on rural roads, and many of these roads in the California desert areas have high speed limits and poor visibility.
“No matter where your destination is this summer or how brief your car ride might be, always buckle your children in using the appropriate car seat for their age,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
