Labor Day Weekend Driving Tips

If you plan to travel during Labor Day weekend, be extra cautious—the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that major accidents will be up during the holiday weekend. Many families plan end-of-summer travel during Labor Day, which leads to higher traffic on the roads and greater accident risks.

The NSC estimates 421 fatalities and 48,400 serious injuries from car crashes during the three-day weekend. This would be an 11% increase from past Labor Days weekends.

NSC president Deborah A.P. Hersman urges anyone traveling this weekend to stay alert and drive defensively. She reasons that making smart decisions might be the difference between a relaxing weekend and one spent in the hospital.

Follow the NSC’s safe driving tips for a safe weekend of travel:

  1. Always wear your seat belt.
  2. Make sure your children are always properly restrained in the appropriate car seat.
  3. Never drink and drive.
  4. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and do not drive if you are fatigued.
  5. Never drive distracted.
  6. Get a good understanding of your vehicle’s safety systems. If you are unsure, check out MyCarDoesWhat.org.
  7. If possible, limit the teens your teenager drives with. Having a single young passenger in the vehicle can increase a teenager’s risk of a fatal crash by 44%.
  8. Check your vehicle for recalls. Right now there are 53 million vehicles on the road that have open recalls. Check for open recalls at checktoprotect.org.
