Los Angeles Approves $6.5 Million Settlement to Bicyclist Injured by Pothole

A Sherman Oaks man who was injured after riding his bicycle into a pothole was awarded a $6.5 million settlement by the Los Angeles City Council. In 2015, 58-year-old Peter Godefroy was riding his bicycle on Valley Vista Boulevard when he struck a pothole. He lost control and was thrown from the bike. Godefroy suffered a traumatic brain injury and numerous broken bones. According to his attorney, his injuries have been severe and life-altering.

According to the lawsuit, the low lighting and poorly maintained roads in the area made the pothole a “concealed trap for bicyclists.” They claimed the city failed to repair the damage or adequately warn residents about the hazard. In September, the city council voted unanimously to approve the settlement.

Road Defect Lawsuits

It can be tricky to prove liability in a road defect case like this, as it can be difficult to hold the government accountable for accidents. Fortunately in this case, the Los Angeles City Council acted in the best interest of the injured resident.

“We’re glad Mr. Godefroy was offered a fair settlement for his injuries. Hopefully this is a catalyst for improved safety measures for bicyclists in the area,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
