A mother and her teenage daughter lost their lives in a tractor-trailer accident near Phelan Wednesday. The fatal crash occurred at 2 p.m. on State Route 138, 6 miles west of I-15. Officials have identified the victims as 53-year-old Reina Madrid and her daughter, 17-year-old Gisseth Madrid.
According to police, the Madrids were traveling west on the highway in a Dodge Ram 3500 van when they drifted across the roadway. The van then struck the side of a tractor-trailer heading east on the highway. The impact caused the van to roll multiple times. The mother and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant of the van, a relative of the Madrids, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Family members said the Madrids just recently moved to Phelan. Reina was a pastor at Centro Cristiano Familiar in Fontana. Her daughter had just been accepted to college and was going to break the news when she arrived home that day.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the deadly crash.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the Madrids,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
