With a growing elderly population in the U.S. comes a host of new issues. One such issue that has become an all-too-common problem is nursing home understaffing. New data from the federal government reveals that the majority of nursing homes in the U.S. have fewer staff than what they reported to the government.
The data collected by the government on nursing home staffing examined more than 14,000 facilities. It reveals that these facilities have frequent fluctuations in staffing, with weekends being particularly understaffed. On average, on the worst-staffed days at a facility, nursing home staff cared for nearly twice as many residents as they did on days when they were fully staffed.
Why is Understaffing Such a Problem?
Nursing homes and assisted living centers are home to elderly citizens who cannot care for themselves. A lack of trained staff members, such as nurses and other caretakers, can leave these individuals vulnerable and neglected. On days when nursing homes are understaffed, there are undoubtedly gaps in care for the residents.
If your loved one has suffered injury as a result of negligent care at a nursing facility, contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible to discuss your case. The nursing home may be liable for your loved one’s injuries.
“You never want to think that your elderly loved one is not being adequately cared for in a nursing home, but this is unfortunately the reality for some people. If your loved one has been hurt at an assisted care facility, don’t hesitate to contact a personal injury attorney,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
