Attorneys have reached a tentative settlement in the Oak Hills High School sexual hazing lawsuit. The settlement was reported January 23, roughly three weeks before the trial was set to begin on February 14.
Letha Selby, the mother of former Oak Hills High student Josh Villegas, filed the lawsuit in the summer of 2014. The suit names the high school and Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD), along with the school’s head football coach Robert Kistner, assistant coach Robert Metzger and former volunteer coach Robert Brammer.
The lawsuit claims that Villegas was sodomized and suffered verbal abuse while on the football team as a freshman in 2013. It also accuses the district and school officials of covering up the abuse.
ESPN Investigates Sexual Hazing
Villegas appeared in an ESPN program “Outside the Lines,” which aired in September 2016. The special report investigated the dark and widespread trend of hazing incidents involving sodomy. Investigators found more than 40 incidents since 2011. Five former Oak Hills High football players came forward on the program. They confirmed the culture of sexual hazing at the school.
Just last month, a Linfield College student sued a fraternity for a hazing incident that resulted in him losing his right eye.
“Hazing is abusive and destructive behavior that has no place in our schools. It’s time to bring an end to these barbaric rituals,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
