A driver was killed in a rollover crash off Highway 74 Wednesday afternoon. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of a green Mazda Miata was traveling west on Highway 74 a mile west of McCall Park Road when she drifted onto the north shoulder. The car then rolled over 200 feet down the embankment.
Officers say the driver, Kathi Vogley of Idyllwild, was ejected from the vehicle. She died at the scene. The fatal rollover crash occurred around 2 p.m. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the incident.
Rollover crashes are some of the deadliest auto accidents, making up 33% of fatal passenger vehicle crashes in 2014. Rollover crashes often lead to occupants being ejected, increasing the likelihood of fatality.
“The terrain surrounding roads like Highway 74 is very unforgiving. Drivers must be totally focused on the road to avoid a crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
