Overnight Big Rig Crash Causes I-10 Lane Closures

An overnight big rig crash Wednesday on I-10 east of the Coachella Valley left a truck driver injured. The big rig was traveling west on I-10 near Box Canyon Road when the driver began drifting off the road into the median.

The big rig then crashed into a concrete pillar underneath the Box Canyon Road overpass. The truck’s contents spilled onto the eastbound lanes, resulting in eastbound lane closures overnight.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the driver, 61-year-old Magdaleno Perez, was recovering Thursday. Police did not specify the nature of his injuries. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved, but the crash remains under investigation.

Overnight Big Rig Crash Occurs on Deadly Stretch of I-10

Wednesday night’s big rig crash happened on the same stretch of I-10 that has seen numerous crashes, many of them deadly, in the past year. This stretch of highway runs through miles of open desert, which can lead to tunnel vision and drowsiness. The area has also seen an increase in big rigs traveling on the highway while transporting goods across the corridor. The higher number of trucks along the highway might also be contributing to the increase in crashes.

“We’re happy to hear the driver is going to recover from this accident. Drivers need remain aware of the dangers of driving along this stretch of desert highway, particularly alone and at night,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
