A pedestrian was fatally struck in Indio Friday morning. The incident took place around 6:30 a.m. on Van Buren Street near Martin Van Buren Elementary School. The pedestrian was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle.

The pedestrian died at the scene. Police say the driver cooperated with the investigation and was not arrested. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be factors.

Pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise in recent years and now account for 25% of all traffic fatalities. To increase awareness of the issue, California declared September Pedestrian Safety Month. Despite the efforts to educate drivers and pedestrians of the problem, fatal pedestrian accidents continue to plague Southern California roads.

“We’re devastated to learn that another pedestrian has been fatally struck in the Coachella Valley. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this time,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
