Prescription Heartburn Medications Linked to Kidney Failure

New research shows some prescription heartburn medications might lead to long-term kidney damage. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) including Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec used to treat acid reflux and heartburn have been shown to increase risk of chronic kidney disease by 20 to 50 percent, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Prescription heartburn medications have been linked to short-term kidney problems in the past, such as inflammatory kidney disease. However, new research shows these drugs can have long-term effects on the kidneys—specifically chronic kidney disease, which causes the kidneys to lose their ability to filter blood and can eventually lead to kidney failure.

PPIs were used by roughly 15 million Americans in 2013, and it is likely that a large percentage of them were prescribed inappropriately. As a rule, PPIs should only be used in serious and/or chronic disorders like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), not to treat simple heartburn.

If you have been prescribed a PPI drug and are concerned about the potential side effects, talk to your doctor about your concerns and about alternative treatments.

“Long-term and potentially life-threatening effects on the kidneys are simply not worth the relief of temporary heartburn or acid reflux,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “Doctors should only prescribe these potent medications for very serious cases.”
