Regulators Investigate Hyundai Seat Belt Defect

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is investigating claims that the front passenger seat belt in 2013 Hyundai Sonatas could break loose in a crash. The investigation comes after two complaints by owners claiming the seat belt detached from its anchoring point.

According to one report, the seat belt could not be reattached after the accident. One person involved in that accident suffered injuries requiring medical attention.

Seat Belt Investigation Could Lead to Recall

The ODI investigation into the seat belt defect is just a preliminary evaluation. If investigators determine this to be a persistent defect in these vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) could then request a recall. The recall would affect around 313,000 Sonatas in the U.S.

“Drivers and passengers rely on seat belts to protect them on the road. Seat belt usage reduces the probability of serious injuries and death by about half. Therefore, we hope investigators get to the bottom of this issue quickly,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
