Is Convicted DUI Offender Guilty of Vehicular Manslaughter?

Police arrested a Victorville man for vehicular manslaughter after he caused a fatal crash Saturday night. The collision happened around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Mojave Drive and Amethyst Road. According to police, 56-year-old Alexander Delapaz-Perez failed to stop at a stop sign on northbound Amethyst Road and broadsided a westbound Honda Accord.

The Honda driver, 35-year-old Angel Barranco, was trapped in his vehicle. Firefighters extracted him using the Jaws of Life. He was then taken to the hospital for major injuries. Barranco later passed away from his injuries.

Barranco’s 23-year-old wife Barbara Velasco—who is 7 months pregnant—and his mother-in-law, 42-year-old Monica Alarcon, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both passengers were also rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Vehicular Manslaughter Suspect Has DUI History

Delapaz-Perez was hospitalized for minor injuries before being taken into custody. He faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury. The suspect allegedly has prior DUI convictions.

Police continue to investigate the deadly crash. Anyone with information should contact Victorville Police at (760) 241-2911.

“It is unconscionable that a convicted DUI offender ended up back behind the wheel to cause this deadly crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
