Report Reveals Shortcomings of Semi-Autonomous Driving Systems

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a report on the risks of semi-autonomous driving systems. “Reality Check,” as it is called, assesses the semi-autonomous systems used by Tesla, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo.

While the systems can help to prevent or mitigate accidents, they can also be dangerous for drivers who are not paying attention. They can also fail under certain circumstances and are not completely reliable.

Of particular concern is the system used in Tesla Model S and Model 3 vehicles. During a test of the automatic braking feature, both vehicles applied the brakes to mitigate a crash; however, the cars still struck a stationary object. The other vehicles tested stopped in time to avoid the collision. However, the test also found that Teslas braked earlier and avoided the collision when adaptive cruise control was in use.

Lane-centering systems in the vehicles tested were also a cause for concern. The systems often failed, particularly when navigating on curves or hills.

The IIHS acknowledges that much of this information is outlined in the vehicle owner manuals. However, drivers do not always read their vehicle manuals. The Institute emphasizes that these systems are not self-driving systems, and drivers need to continue to pay close attention behind the wheel to safely benefit from the systems.

“Vehicle technology has come a long way in recent years, and many of these semi-autonomous driving features are very beneficial for drivers. However, it’s crucial for drivers to remain alert while using these features to ensure they can intervene if the systems fail,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
