Safety Tips for Avoiding a Golf Cart Accident

A man sustained serious injuries in a golf cart accident in Palm Desert Thursday. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Mountain Vista Golf Club at Sun City Palm Desert. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 84-year-old Robert Dyer was driving a golf cart near the intersection of Gray Hawk Drive and Del Webb Boulevard when he was rear-ended by a northbound Toyota Camry.

Byer was ejected from the golf cart. He suffered moderate injuries in the accident. Authorities then transported him to Desert Regional Medical Center. Barbara Heinrichs, an 82-year-old Palm Desert resident, was driving the Toyota. She was not hurt in the golf cart accident.

Police continue to investigate the crash. They do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.

Golf carts might not seem as big a safety risk as passenger cars, but they pose risks just like other vehicles do. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 10,000 people visit the emergency room each year due to golf cart accidents.

4 Safety Tips to Avoid a Golf Cart Accident

  1. Always wear your seat belt.

  2. Slow down significantly when turning. Golf carts don’t have doors to keep occupants from falling out during sharp turns.

  3. Never drive a golf cart while intoxicated.

  4. Honk your horn at the intersection. Golf carts are small and quiet compared to other vehicles, so they can easily be missed by other drivers.

“Although they don’t travel as fast as motor vehicles, golf carts can still be dangerous if drivers don’t take the proper precautions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
