More than 100 women are involved in a class action lawsuit against a trucking company for sexual harassment issues in the workplace. The company is CRST Expedited, the largest team carrier in the U.S., based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The lawsuit alleges that female truckers working for the company have endured harassment ranging from catcalling to rape. Moreover, the victims claim the company, when confronted with claims of abuse, did little or nothing in response.
Investigation Reveals Trucking Company’s Failure to Address Sexual Assault Claims
In 2016, the Investigative Fund at the National Institute began investigating sexual harassment in the trucking industry. The investigation revealed a widespread problem at CRST, as well as the company’s failure to address sexual harassment claims. According to one CRST employee relations manager, an accusation of sexual harassment is considered unfounded without outside corroboration or an admission from the accused.
In January, the Investigative Fund and nonprofit organization Public Justice requested that more CRST documents be unsealed. These documents could include depositions related to the case, as well as internal documents demonstrating how the company handled sexual harassment.
“Trucking companies must do a better job protecting their employees from sexual assault. This company’s failure to address claims of abuse is unacceptable,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
