Has Strong Economy Led to Rise in Fatal Accidents?

Fatal accidents have risen 9% in the first half of 2016 when compared with last year, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). From January to June, about 19,100 people were killed in traffic accidents in the U.S., and 2.2 million were injured.

Traffic fatalities have been on an upward trend across the country since 2014. The NSC says it is no coincidence that the rise in fatalities has coincided with falling gas prices and an improving economy. Up until the past few years, fatal traffic accidents were on the decline, and then in 2015 we experienced the largest percentage rise in traffic fatalities in 50 years.

The NSC attributes the upward trend in fatal accidents primarily to the strengthened economy and lower unemployment rates, leading to more people on the roads.

“There is always going to be an increased risk when more people are on our roadways—all the more reason to drive carefully, follow traffic laws and eliminate distractions when you’re behind the wheel,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
