As the long-lasting Takata airbag inflator recall continues to create headaches for drivers across the country, recent news from noted Italian luxury car maker Ferrari add another long-established brand to the list of affected vehicles. According to Ferrari, 982 vehicles are being recalled due to faulty Takata airbag inflators installed.
As part of Ferrari’s statement, the company has warned drivers that the airbag inflator could sporadically explode, resulting in high velocity metal shards traveling throughout the passenger cabin In the worst of scenarios, this could easily result in death for the driver and passenger
Exploring the Data
Recent data has shown that the Ferrari vehicles affected by the recall include the 2009-2011 California models and the 2010 – 2011 458 Italia. The inflator in question is situated in the passenger side of the vehicle.
Some car owners may be frustrated to learn that their vehicle is part of a second round of Takata recalls. This is due to the fact that the first method used to repair the Takata airbag inflators was the introduction of stabilized ammonium nitrate, a propellant that was deemed a “fix” for the problem at hand. However, as the ammonium nitrate degrades over time, it is possible that sporadic explosions could occur.
The vehicles mentioned here are only two of several Ferrari models that are currently under recall. Owners can check here for more information.
