Uber Agrees to $148 Million Settlement Over Data Breach

Last month, Uber agreed to a $148 million settlement over a major data breach. The breach occurred in 2016 and affected roughly 57 million Uber customers. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were included in the settlement.

The company reported that customers’ names, email addresses and phone numbers were compromised in the breach, as well as around 600,000 drivers license numbers. Moreover, the breach was not reported until a year later, and it was revealed that the company had paid hackers to conceal evidence of the breach.

As a result of the cover-up, Uber’s then-chief security officer was fired. The company has since been working to improve rider safety and security, with measures such as as the implementation new safety features on the app.

“This settlement is an important lesson to other businesses that covering up data breaches will not be tolerated,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
