US Department of Transportation Releases New Data on Traffic Fatalities

Recent data released by the US Department of Transportation has painted an optimistic picture about the safety of the nation’s highways. According to the extensive studies undertaken by the federal agency, the total number of traffic fatalities have decreased over the past year compared to previous years. On closer look, the total number of traffic deaths decreased 2.8% in 2018, marking the second consecutive year in which fatalities declined.

Although this is obviously great information for the country as a whole, the data isn’t quite as positive for the Coachella Valley. In fact, the same study found that the number of fatalities locally has increased year over year from 2017 to 2018. Even more discouraging may be the fact that current 2019 data collected is also pointing to an increase in fatality numbers for this year as well.

Understanding Traffic Fatalities in the Coachella Valley

Interstate 10 has remained a consistent problem for Coachella Valley drivers over the years. According to local data, there have already been 17 fatalities on I-10 so far this year. Traffic officials continue to remind drivers that two of the primary causes for traffic fatalities are failure to respect traffic signage and laws, as well as distracted driving. These two issues account for the bulk of traffic accident, injuries and fatalities occurring on a yearly basis here.
