Will MobileSpike Technology Reduce Police Pursuit Fatalities?

A new law enforcement device called the MobileSpike might revolutionize police chases and save lives. The device is essentially a spike strip that attaches to the front of a police car. Compressed air shoots the strip sideways under the suspect’s tire to deflate it and end the chase.

The device was designed by MobileSpike CEO Michael Moormeier, who was concerned about the high rate of pursuit-related fatalities in the U.S. More than 5,000 bystanders have been killed as a result of police chases since 1979. There were 322 pursuit-related deaths in 2013.

The problem hits close to home, considering Riverside County is the 10th deadliest U.S. county for police pursuits. Between 1979 and 2014, 100 people lost their lives in police pursuits. About half of those fatalities were passengers or bystanders, not the offenders responsible for the chase.

The MobileSpike is not the only new gadget created to help police safely apprehend pursuit suspects. The Grappler, developed by Arizona inventor Leonard Stock, attaches to the police car’s front bumper and allows the officer to lay a lasso under the suspect’s rear tire. The officer then hits the brakes in his vehicle and drags the suspect’s car to a stop. A Virginia Beach company has developed a device called the StarChase, which is a tracker that officers can shoot onto a suspect’s car. The StarChase tracks the suspect and officers can view the location of the vehicle in real-time on a secure web portal.

“This new technology is the future of police pursuits. We are excited to see the positive impact these devices will have on our communities,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
