California Teenagers Hurt Playing with Fireworks

Two teenage boys were injured while playing with fireworks in Arcadia Friday night. Witnesses saw the boys, ages 14 and 17, playing with fireworks at Bonita Park around 8 p.m. According to a witness, one of the boys took out a firework and lit it. The firework then exploded in the boy’s hand. The witness says it took his whole hand off.

Both teens were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The 14-year-old suffered severe injuries to his hand, while the 17-year-old suffered minor injuries to his arm and chest.

Young Males Most Likely to Get Injured Playing with Fireworks

A Journal of Surgical Research study of fireworks-related hospitalizations shows that males ages 10-19 are the most likely demographic to injure themselves playing with fireworks. The overwhelming majority of these hospitalizations occur in the month of July. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 68% of fireworks injuries occurred between June 18 and July 18 last year.

Firework-related injuries are usually hand, wrist or finger injuries. Most of these injuries are burns, but bruises and open wounds are also common.

“There is a good reason that these types of fireworks are illegal in California for consumers. The irreversible injuries you can sustain are simply not worth the risk,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
