Can Swimming Lessons Save You from a Drowning Accident?

A La Puente man died in a drowning accident at The Saguaro Hotel earlier this month. When first responders arrived at the Palm Springs hotel at 5:22 p.m., 39-year-old Eric Perez of La Puente was lying unconscious out of the pool. He was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries at 5:55 p.m.

Police do not suspect foul play in the drowning accident, but they are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved. According to Perez’s friends, they were in the pool with him when they noticed he was missing. They found him at the bottom of the pool, pulled him out and attempted to resuscitate him until authorities arrived.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact the Palm Springs Police at (760) 323-8116.

Adult drowning, while not as prevalent as child drowning, is still a serious problem in California. As of 2014, California was the state with the highest drowning rate. There are more than 3,500 unintentional fatal drownings in the U.S. every year. The best way to reduce your risk of drowning is to take formal swimming lessons or water safety classes. Properly learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%.

“If you live in California, learning to swim is crucial to your safety. Please consider taking lessons if you don’t know how to swim,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
