CVS Announces New Policies to Curb Opioid Addiction

As a response to the nation’s ever-growing opioid problem, CVS has announced it will be taking measures to help combat opioid abuse. Beginning in February 2018, the pharmacy chain will implement some significant limits on patients’ access to painkillers.

What Does the CVS Initiative Entail?

The new CVS policy will limit patients who are “new to therapy” to no more than seven days’ worth of opioids. Pharmacists will also limit daily dosages based on the strength of the painkiller. Furthermore, they will require patients to use less addictive forms of the drug before moving them to more addictive versions. The goal of this new policy is to help fight the misuse of painkillers, which has become a full-fledged epidemic in the U.S. in recent years.

This is the first time a major pharmacy chain has restricted the number of opioids patients can get. Prescribing doctors are generally the ones responsible for limiting their patients’ access to opioids. CVS hopes to leverage its national presence and platform to help steer patients away from misusing prescription drugs.

“Fighting opioid abuse in this country is going to take efforts from the many entities involved in the manufacturing and distribution of painkillers. We are glad to see CVS leading the way for drug store chains to help curb the epidemic,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
