Despite Dangers, Californians Still Driving Distracted

Many California drivers are not taking the dangers of distracted driving seriously, according to a study by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The April study shows that 12.8% of drivers were seen using a mobile device, up from 9.2% in 2015. These numbers are considered a minimum, as they are based on catching people in the act of using a mobile device. The actual numbers could be significantly higher.

The increase in distracted driving can be seen in the crash statistics. In 2013, distracted driving was responsible for 10,162 fatalities. In 2015, that number rose to 11,090.

During the month of April—National Distracted Driving Awareness Month—the California Highway Patrol (CHP) offered more than 300 educational presentations on distracted driving. They also issued 13,496 tickets for distracted driving violations in April, but that is a 27% decrease from the year before. The decrease is due in part to drivers being more aware that they are being watched and knowing could be cited if seen with a device in hand.

The goal for the CHP is for drivers to understand the dangers of distracted driving and follow the laws for their own safety.

“We have a wealth of information on the dangers of distracted driving. How many more fatal crashes need to happen before drivers are convinced they should put their phones down?” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
