Does Xarelto cause internal bleeding? Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals face a lawsuit claiming the anticoagulant drug Xarelto causes internal bleeding. A couple from Ohio filed the suit after the wife suffered from life-threatening internal bleeding after taking Xarelto.

A doctor prescribed Xarelto to the plaintiff to treat her atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that increases the risk of stroke. However, after two months on the medication she developed a gastrointestinal bleed, anemia and other unspecified injuries. The couple is suing the company for more than $150,000 for current and future medical expenses.

The FDA approved Xarelto in 2011 but has since given it two “black box” warnings. These warnings are the result of serious hazards with a drug and are the strictest warnings the FDA administers.

The lawsuit is just one of more than 3,400 lawsuits claiming Xarelto causes internal bleeding, and several incidents have proven fatal.
