Dog Attacks on Children

Recurring Tragedy

On July 25, 2014, a 1-year-old child was bitten by a pit bull in Cathedral City.

On August 11, 2014, a 5-year-old was bit by a pit bull in Indio, an 11-year-old was also attacked.

On May 8, 2014, a 4-year-old boy was chased and killed by three dogs in Delaware.

Each of these dog attacks involved dogs that had not been neutered.

About 30 people are killed by dogs each year.

Defendant Alex Jackson was convicted of second degree murder in Landcaster on August 29, 2014, after his four pit bulls were found tearing 63-year-old woman, Pamela Devitt, apart. Pamela had been out for a morning run.

Dog owners are “strictly liable” for any injuries caused by their animal, if not restrained by a leash where the county or city has a leash law. It is also a misdemeanor to abandon any animal (Penal Code Section 597(s)).

Benefits of Neutering

Neutered males roam less, are less destructive, and are much less likely to get into fights. Neutered females are more predictable, relaxed, and are less likely to need expensive surgery later in their lives.

The Animal Samaritans Vet Clinic in Thousand Palms offers low cost neutering. Last year, the clinic even waived $81,600 in surgery fees for qualified pet owners.

In the last 2.5 years, Animal Samaritans rescued and saved the lives of 6,000 animals from public shelters.
