Driver Dies After Rear-Ending a Big Rig

A driver was killed in Apple Valley Saturday after rear-ending a big rig. Police say 46-year-old Phillip Kain was traveling east on Bear Valley Road when he crashed into the back of the Freightliner. Kain died at the scene. The fatal crash occurred around 4:40 a.m. near Reata Road.

Photos of the vehicle show the entire front half totally destroyed. The driver of the Freightliner, identified as 54-year-old Jesus de Leon, was not injured in the crash.

Did Distraction Lead to Rear-Ending a Big Rig?

Police have not said whether distracted driving or other impairments contributed to the crash. However, the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station reported there were no signs the driver attempted to brake before rear-ending the semi. The fatal crash remains under investigation.

What Makes Distracted Driving So Deadly?

Distracted driving killed 3,477 people in 2015. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly 660,000 drivers were using cell phones while driving during daylight hours. Considering a driver can travel the length of a football field in the five seconds it takes to answer a text, the sheer number of distracted drivers on the roads can have disastrous consequences.

“Our prayers are with the friends and family of the driver killed in this crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
