Driver with Four Times the Legal BAC Limit Causes Fatal Accident

Police say a drunk driver had nearly four times the legal BAC limit in his system when he caused a fatal crash in Coachella Sunday morning. The crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 86 Expressway and Avenue 50.

According to police, 25-year-old Cristian Hernandez Torres ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into a vehicle driven by 64-year-old Terry Kaul. The San Diego woman was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center with severe injuries. She passed away the following day.

Torres had a BAC of .31 when the crash occurred. That is nearly four times the legal BAC limit of .08. He pleaded not guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter and other charges during a hearing Wednesday. Torres was issued warrants last year after failing to appear in court for two DUI cases.

“Repeat DUI offenders continue to pose a hazard on the road. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
