Drunk Teen Driver Kills Man in Cathedral City Crash

Police have arrested the drunk teen driver who caused a fatal collision in Cathedral City Thursday morning. According to the Cathedral City Police Department, 19-year-old Jose Bustamante Meza was heading west on McCallum Way in his Jeep Cherokee when he failed to stop at a stop sign at Whispering Palms Trail. The Jeep then crashed into a Ford Mustang headed north on Whispering Palms Trail around 2:40 a.m.

Meza’s vehicle struck the passenger side door of the Mustang at a high rate of speed. The Mustang’s passenger, 26-year-old Miguel Villanueva Munguia, died in the crash. Authorities transported both drivers to the hospital for unknown injuries.

The initial crash investigation shows the Mustang had stopped at the stop sign and legally entered the intersection when the crash occurred. Police say the Jeep entered the intersection at unsafe speeds after failing to properly stop.

Drunk Teen Driver Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter

Authorities later arrested Meza for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He has also been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter.

The intersection remained closed throughout the morning, causing delays for those making their morning commute. The crash investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information should contact police at (760) 770-0343.
