Is E-Cigarette Explosion to Blame for Crash?

An e-cigarette explosion caused a car accident in Arizona on Tuesday. According to police, a woman was backing out of her driveway in Tempe when her e-cigarette exploded and caught fire in her lap. The 20-year-old woman jumped out of her vehicle while it was still in gear. The SUV then jumped a curb and crashed into a tree.

The driver was taken to the hospital for burns and broken bones. The vehicle apparently ran over her legs, causing her to break both her hips.

E-Cigarette Explosions a Common Cause of Injury

It isn’t clear what caused this woman’s cigarette to explode, but these incidents are not uncommon. There have been 214 reported e-cigarette explosions as of this January, according to ecigone.com. Of those, 137 resulted in injury or death.

Safety Tips for Avoiding an E-Cigarette Explosion

Follow these 5 steps to avoid an e-cigarette explosion:

  1. Only purchase batteries made by reliable brands. Cheap knock-offs are likely not subject to regulations and testing, making them more likely to explode.
  2. Only use the charger specifically designed for your device.
  3. Follow the battery charging guidelines, and never leave your charging device unattended.
  4. Don’t carry your e-cigarette batteries with your keys or loose change. Contact with metal objects can cause your battery to short, which can lead to an explosion. Safely of any batteries that appear damaged.
  5. Don’t overcharge your device. Remove it from the charger once it reaches 100%.
