Explosion Causes Cement Plant Fire in Apple Valley
Explosion Causes Cement Plant Fire in Apple Valley

Two firefighters were injured in a cement plant fire that erupted early Tuesday morning. The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. at the Cemex plant located on the 25200 block of Black Mountain Quarry Road in Apple Valley.

Roughly 20 firefighters responded to the incident, and the blaze took about an hour to extinguish. Authorities believe the fire was started by a minor explosion involving the plants alternate fuels, which consist of wood chips, pistachio shells and tire chippings, but the cause is still under investigation.

One firefighter suffered an ankle injury and the other suffered heat exhaustion from fighting the cement plant fire. The fire marshal said there were Cemex employees present during the blaze, but so far none have reported injuries.

OSHA standards require that workplaces implement several standards to keep employees safe in the event of a fire. Every workplace must have:

  • Proper fire exits
  • Training for employees on preventing fire deaths and injuries
  • Appropriate fire extinguishers and proper training if employers expect employees to fight fires
  • Written emergency plans for evacuations during a fire
  • Appropriate evacuation training for all employees
  • Two doors or other means of escape for fire emergencies that are not close to each other in proximity
  • Fire exits that are not locked or blocked from the inside while employees are in the building
  • Routes to fire exits that are free from obstructions
  • Properly marked exit signs on fire exits

“It’s fortunate that firefighters were able to put out this fire quickly and protect the employees at the plant from being seriously injured,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
